Crucifix
Quick Introduction
The crucifix traps both of your opponent's arms — one with your legs, one with your hands — leaving them defenseless. Primarily entered from turtle attacks when you hook an arm while taking the back. One of the most dominant positions in BJJ because the opponent literally cannot defend any attack. Alexandre Vieira and Levi Jones-Leary have built world-class games around it.
Position Overview
From: Turtle attacks (primary), side control arm trap, back mount transitions | Leads to: Rear naked choke, one-arm choke, armlock, back mount
From Turtle (Primary Entry)
- Opponent is turtled, you're perpendicular behind them
- Reach across and hook their far arm at the wrist
- Sit back, threading your near leg OVER their trapped arm
- Triangle your legs around their arm — now it's locked
- Roll to your side, pulling them on top of you (face up)
- Their free arm is controlled by your hands
- Both arms trapped — attack freely
Key detail: The leg triangle must be tight on their arm BEFORE you roll. If the arm slips out during the roll, you lose the position entirely.
One-Arm Choke (Highest Percentage Finish)
- Crucifix established — both arms trapped
- Slide your choking hand under their chin from the arm-controlled side
- No need for a second hand — they can't defend
- Squeeze forearm into their neck, apply pressure
- One-arm RNC finish — devastatingly tight
Key detail: Because both arms are trapped, you only need one arm to choke. This is what makes the crucifix so dangerous — submissions that normally have defenses become inescapable.
Armlock Finish
- From crucifix, their leg-trapped arm is fully extended
- Hip into their elbow joint for an armbar
- Control their wrist with your hands, apply leverage
- Slow, controlled pressure — the arm is completely isolated
Core Principles
- Arm separation — Separate their arms before they tuck elbows
- Leg triangle first — Secure one arm with legs before attacking the second
- Total control — Both arms trapped = zero defense
- Multiple finishes — Choke, armlock, reverse triangle all available
- Turtle awareness — Best entries come from turtle, so develop your top turtle game
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Losing arm during roll | Secure tight leg triangle BEFORE rolling |
| Only holding, not attacking | They'll eventually escape — attack immediately |
| Ignoring turtle setups | Most crucifixes start from turtle — drill the entry |
| Loose leg triangle | Squeeze legs tight on the trapped arm |
Next Steps
- Turtle Attacks — Primary setup position
- Rear Naked Choke — Standard finish from crucifix
- Back Mount — Transition if crucifix is lost
