Cross Collar Choke
Quick Introduction
The cross collar choke is the fundamental gi choke, using crossed collar grips to create a scissoring action across the throat. From mount it's devastating; from guard it breaks posture and creates constant threat. Gi-specific technique — requires deep collar grips.
Position Overview
From: Mount (primary), Closed Guard | Finish: Scissoring forearms compress neck via collar grips
From Mount (Classic)
- First hand palm-up, thumb inside — grip DEEP into opposite collar (4+ fingers, past shoulder)
- Second hand palm-down, thumb outside — into same-side collar
- Elbows point down toward mat, NOT flared out
- Drive chest forward to keep them flat
- Expand chest while pulling elbows toward your hips
- Forearms scissor across their neck — collar tightens around arteries
Key detail: The first grip must be absurdly deep. If your fingers aren't past their shoulder, it won't finish. Shallow grips are the #1 reason this choke fails.
From Guard
- Break their posture down (pull them close)
- Establish first deep collar grip (same as above)
- Second grip stacks on top
- Pull them into you while scissoring forearms
- Hip bump or angle to increase pressure
Key detail: From guard, the choke doubles as posture control. Even if you don't finish, maintaining the grip keeps them broken down.
Core Principles
- Depth is everything — shallow grips never finish; get past the shoulder
- Elbows down, not out — downward elbows create the scissor action
- Thumb inside first, outside second — creates proper forearm crossing
- Chest pressure — from mount, chest forward keeps them flat and controlled
- Gi-specific — this technique requires collar material; no-gi needs alternatives
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Shallow first grip | Must be past shoulder — 4+ fingers deep |
| Elbows flaring out | Drive elbows down toward mat for scissor action |
| Not driving chest forward | Chest pressure keeps them flat; they escape if you sit up |
| Both thumbs same direction | First thumb inside, second thumb outside |
