Body as Lines
Overview
To understand the guard, the body must be interpreted as a system of lines, which represent barriers to be overcome.
The Four Lines of Defense
Line 1: Feet
- Function: First line of defense
- Purpose: Controls distance
- Tools: Push, post, hook
- Range: Long distance
Line 2: Knees
- Function: Secondary barrier
- Purpose: Power generation point
- Tools: Shield, frame, pinch
- Range: Mid-range control
Line 3: Hips
- Function: Critical control point
- Purpose: Center of movement
- Tools: Bridge, shrimp, rotate
- Range: Close range
Line 4: Shoulders/Head
- Function: Final defensive line
- Purpose: Frame creation and submission defense
- Tools: Frame, turn, protect neck
- Range: Emergency defense
How Lines Work Together
Each line supports the others. When one line is compromised, the others must compensate:
- Feet gone? → Knees become primary defense
- Knees passed? → Hips must create distance
- Hips controlled? → Shoulders frame for survival
Application in Guard
Understanding this system is crucial for both:
- Guard players - Maintain your lines
- Guard passers - Systematically defeat each line
Connection to Guard Types
Different guards emphasize different lines:
- Spider Guard → Maximizes Line 1 (feet)
- Half Guard → Focuses on Line 2 (knees)
- Deep Half → Uses Line 3 (hips)
- Frame Guards → Emphasizes Line 4 (shoulders)
