50/50 Guard

Quick Introduction

50/50 is a symmetrical leg entanglement where both players have equal grips on each other's legs. Historically considered a stalling position in gi, the no-gi revolution turned it into a leg lock battleground. The player who attacks first or achieves inside position wins. Central to the Danaher/DDS and Lachlan Giles leg lock systems.

Position Overview

From: De La Riva inversions, berimbolo entries, K-Guard transitions, leg lock exchanges | Leads to: Heel hook, sweeps to top, back takes (via berimbolo), pass to side control

Inside Heel Hook (Primary Attack)

  1. Establish 50/50 with inside knee position
  2. Control their foot — prevent them from hiding it
  3. Break their triangle lock on your leg if possible
  4. Two-on-one grip on their heel (palm up, palm down)
  5. Rotate toward their toes while controlling their hip with your legs
  6. Finish with controlled rotational pressure

Key detail: The battle for the heel is everything. Whoever grips the heel first while denying theirs has a massive advantage.

Sweep to Top

  1. In 50/50, grip their far ankle or pants
  2. Drive into them while standing up on your trapped leg
  3. Use your free leg to post and create base
  4. Come to top 50/50 — now you can work to pass
  5. Untangle legs and establish side control

Key detail: In gi competition, coming to top 50/50 scores an advantage. In no-gi, use top position to disengage and pass.

Back Take (Berimbolo Exit)

  1. From bottom 50/50, invert underneath them
  2. Use your hooks to spin behind their hips
  3. As you rotate, release the leg entanglement
  4. Establish seatbelt grip on their back
  5. Insert hooks for back mount

Key detail: The berimbolo exit is the highest-value option but requires good inverting ability. Drill the rotation pattern before live application.

Core Principles

  1. Initiative wins — Same position, whoever attacks first has the edge
  2. Inside knee = advantage — The player with inside knee position controls the exchange
  3. Heel access — Gripping their heel while hiding yours is the fundamental battle
  4. Don't stall — 50/50 punishes passivity; always be attacking, sweeping, or transitioning
  5. Know your exits — Sweep to top, berimbolo to back, or disengage to pass

Common Mistakes

MistakeFix
PassivityAttack immediately — sweeps, heel hooks, or transitions
Losing inside kneeFight for it constantly; re-pummel if lost
Exposing your heelHide your foot; grip-fight their hands off
No plan to exitPick a goal: submit, sweep, or disengage

Next Steps

  1. Heel Hook — Primary submission from 50/50
  2. K-Guard — Common entry path into 50/50
  3. Leg Lock Defense — Essential since 50/50 is a two-way street
