The Four Combat Fundamentals
Quick Introduction
Before diving into the complex map of combat stations, beginners should understand the four fundamental phases that define any BJJ match or self-defense situation. These represent the natural progression of combat from standing to submission.
This page explains the basic combat phases in simple terms. For the complete technical map, see Map of Combat (Fight Stations).
1. Distance Management
The space between you and your opponent when neither person has made contact.
- Safe distance — Too far to grab without stepping forward
- Entering distance — The moment you close the gap to initiate contact
- Options — Stay out of range (defensive), close distance for takedown (offensive), or pull guard (BJJ-specific)
2. Standing Clinch
Both fighters standing with established grips on each other.
- Collar tie — Hand behind opponent's neck
- Underhooks — Arms under opponent's arms
- Goals — Execute takedown, pull guard to go to ground on your terms, or break away to reset
3. Ground Clinch
The transitional phase when the fight hits the ground but before clear position is established.
- Scrambles — Chaotic transitions where both fight for position
- Guard recovery — Bottom person trying to establish guard
- Passing attempts — Top person trying to get past legs
- This is where most position battles occur — the bridge between standing and immobilizations
4. Submissions
Techniques that force the opponent to surrender through joint locks or chokes.
- Joint locks — Attack joints beyond natural range (elbow, shoulder, knee, ankle)
- Chokes/strangles — Restrict blood flow or breathing
- All positioning ultimately serves to achieve submissions. Better position = easier submissions.
How These Connect
Distance → Standing Clinch → Ground Clinch → Position → Submission
Alternative paths exist: guard pulls skip the standing clinch, submissions can happen during scrambles, and any phase can reset to distance.
