Anaconda Choke
Quick Introduction
The anaconda wraps around the opponent's neck and their own trapped arm, creating a vice. Part of the front headlock family alongside the guillotine and darce. The gator roll finish is its signature move. Primarily a no-gi technique — devastating from turtle and scrambles.
Position Overview
From: Turtle (primary), front headlock, scrambles | Finish: Arm-in compression via figure-4 grip and gator roll
Classic Anaconda from Turtle
- Opponent in turtle, you perpendicular to their side
- Reach near arm deep under their neck (same side as their extended arm)
- Hand continues through — grab your own bicep (figure-4)
- Other arm wraps over their back, trapping their arm inside
- Lock the grip tight before moving
- Gator roll toward the trapped arm side
- Land on your shoulder (not flat on back)
- Squeeze elbows together, expand chest until tap
Key detail: Lock before rolling. Never attempt the roll without a secure figure-4 grip — you'll lose everything.
From Front Headlock (Standing/Scramble)
- Front headlock position from sprawl or scramble
- Opponent has one arm posted — thread deep under neck on that side
- Figure-4 grip with their arm trapped inside
- Pull them in, drop to hip, explosive gator roll
- Finish in tight ball position
Short Choke (No Roll)
- Same anaconda grip from turtle
- Stay on top instead of rolling — drive shoulder into neck
- Walk body around toward their head
- Squeeze elbows together with downward pressure
- Useful when space is limited or opponent is larger
Core Principles
- Arm must be trapped inside — without arm-in, it's not an anaconda
- Deep threading — shoulder should touch their ear
- Lock before rolling — grip first, commit second
- Roll toward trapped arm — wrong direction loses the choke
- Stay tight — ball position after roll, no space
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Not deep enough | Thread shoulder to their ear, not just hand |
| Rolling wrong direction | Always toward the trapped arm side |
| Grip not locked before roll | Secure figure-4 completely, then commit |
| Landing flat on back | Land on shoulder, stay in tight ball |
Next Steps
- Darce - Opposite-side front headlock choke (complete the system)
- Guillotine - When their arm escapes, switch to guillotine
- Rear Naked Choke - If they counter the roll, take the back
