Single Leg X Guard
Quick Introduction
Single leg X (also called Ashi Garami) is the most fundamental leg entanglement position. You control one of their legs using your legs and hips while lying underneath. Gateway to both sweeps (transition to X-Guard) and leg locks (transition to outside ashi or saddle). The hub of modern no-gi bottom game.
Position Overview
From: Butterfly guard, De La Riva, K-Guard, half guard | Leads to: X-Guard sweeps, straight ankle lock, heel hook entries, back takes
Technical Lift Sweep
- SLX established with tight hip connection
- Inside foot hooks behind their knee, outside foot on far hip
- Extend both legs while pulling their ankle toward you
- They're lifted off the mat — completely off-balance
- Guide them to the side and come up on top
Key detail: The simultaneous push (hips extending) and pull (ankle grip) creates an irresistible lever. Works even against much heavier opponents.
Leg Lock Entry (Outside Ashi)
- From SLX, release outside foot from their hip
- Thread that leg across their body to the outside
- Triangle your legs around their trapped leg
- You're now in outside ashi — attack straight ankle lock or heel hook
Key detail: The transition from SLX to outside ashi is the most common leg lock entry in modern competition. Control their toes/foot to prevent the spin escape.
X-Guard Transition
- From SLX, insert outside foot as a second hook under their far thigh
- Both feet now form an X under their hips
- You're in full X-Guard — broader base, more sweep options
- Elevate and sweep to come on top
Key detail: Add the second hook when you want sweeps more than leg locks. X-Guard is more stable but further from leg lock entries.
Core Principles
- Hip proximity — Your hips must be tight against their leg, no gap
- Inside hook controls the knee — This prevents them from stepping over or extracting
- Ankle grip is the anchor — Without it, they walk free
- Hub position — SLX connects sweeps, leg locks, and guard transitions
- Read reactions — They push in → sweep. They pull back → leg lock. They stand → X-Guard.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Hips too far away | Scoot in — hips glued to their thigh |
| Weak inside hook | Active hook behind knee, not just resting on shin |
| No ankle control | Grip the ankle/foot — both hands if needed |
| Static position | Always threatening — sweep or submit |
| Ignoring far leg | Track their free leg to prevent counter-attacks |
Next Steps
- X-Guard — Add second hook for sweep-focused game
- Straight Ankle Lock — First leg lock to learn from SLX
- K-Guard — Advanced entry system into SLX and leg entanglements
