Sweeps

Sweeps are techniques to reverse position from bottom to top, typically from guard. A completed sweep scores 2 points (IBJJF) and puts you in a dominant position.

What Makes a Sweep Work

Every sweep combines three elements:

  1. Off-balancing - Remove one of their base points (hand, knee) so they can't resist
  2. Timing - Sweep when they're moving, reaching, or defending something else
  3. Leverage - Use hips and legs for power, not arms; angle multiplies force

The best sweeps feel effortless because mechanics are correct, not because you're being tentative.

Core Principles

  1. Control before sweeping - Establish grips and guard before attempting
  2. Commit fully - Half-hearted sweeps fail; use your whole body
  3. Chain attacks - A defended sweep creates the next opportunity
  4. Sweep where they're going - Redirect existing momentum rather than creating new force

Common Mistakes

MistakeFix
Sweeping with no setupCreate reactions first, then sweep
Using arms instead of legsGenerate power from hips and hooks
